How to print a ChatGPT conversation

Guides · Updated

Four ways to print a ChatGPT conversation or save it as a PDF, from your browser, from a share link, from a data export or from a document, with steps checked against OpenAI's help pages.

A good ChatGPT conversation is worth keeping: a plan you worked through, an explanation you finally understood, a long answer you want to read slowly with a pen. Printing one takes a little more care than printing an ordinary webpage, because ChatGPT is an app running in your browser rather than a simple page.

There are four reliable ways to get a conversation onto paper. Pick the one that fits how much of the conversation you want and where you are.

Option 1: print it from your browser

This is the fastest route on a computer.

  1. Open the conversation at chatgpt.com.
  2. Scroll up to the start of the conversation so every message has loaded.
  3. Press Ctrl+P (Windows, Linux) or Command+P (Mac).
  4. Check the preview carefully. App pages don't always print the way they look on screen, so make sure the whole conversation is there and nothing is cut off at the edges.
  5. Choose your printer, or Save as PDF to keep a file, and print.

If the preview looks wrong, try a share link instead (option 2). The shared version is a view-only copy of the conversation at its own address, so it's worth trying when the app page won't print well.

A share link gives you a read-only copy of the conversation at its own web address. According to OpenAI's help page on sharing, the steps are:

  1. Open the conversation.
  2. Select Share.
3. Review the conversation and any sharing options shown.
  4. Select Create link or Copy link, depending on which option appears.
  5. Open the link in your browser and print it with Ctrl+P or Command+P, as in option 1.

A few things worth knowing about share links, all from OpenAI's help page:

  • Shared conversation links begin with https://chatgpt.com/share/.
  • On a personal account, anyone who has the link can view the conversation. Don't share anything private, and delete the link when you're done (Settings, then Data controls, then Shared links, Manage).
  • A personal-account link is a snapshot of the conversation when you created or updated it. Messages you add later aren't included until you select Share and then Update link.
  • You can share a single response instead of the whole conversation, where that option is offered.
  • Links made in a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace only open for members of the same workspace.
  • On a phone, Share can open your device's share sheet, so you can send the link to yourself or open it in your browser and print from there.

Option 3: print from a full export of your chats

If you want many conversations, or everything, ask ChatGPT for a copy of your data. OpenAI's help page on exporting gives these steps:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT and open your profile menu.
  2. Select Settings, then Data controls.
  3. Under Export data, select Export.
  4. On the confirmation screen, select Confirm export.
  5. When the export is ready, ChatGPT sends you an email (or a text, if your account uses a phone number). Open it and select Download data export.

The download is a ZIP file with your chat history and other account data. Unzip it on a computer, open the conversations you want, and print them.

Good to know: OpenAI says exports can take up to 7 days to arrive, and the download link expires 24 hours after you receive it, so download it promptly while signed in to the same account. Self-service export isn't available in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. In the Android app, the same option is under Data controls, Export Data.

Option 4: copy it into a document

When you only want part of a conversation, or want to tidy it up first:

  1. Select the messages you want in the conversation and copy them.
  2. Paste them into a document (Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Pages or any word processor).
  3. Adjust the font size, add headings, delete the parts you don't need.
  4. Print the document, or save it as a PDF.

This takes longer, but it gives you the most control over how the printout looks, and it's the best choice for very long answers with tables or code.

Tips for a better printout

  • Code blocks and wide tables can run off the edge of the page. Switch to landscape or lower the Scale in print settings.
  • Turn off headers and footers in print settings if you don't want the web address and date on every page.
  • Long conversations add up fast. Check the page count in the preview, and print only the pages you need.
  • Save as PDF first if you're on a phone without a printer nearby. You can print the PDF later from any computer.

Get your ChatGPT conversations printed for you

Offprint can print a shared ChatGPT conversation for you. Create a share link (option 2 above), text that chatgpt.com/share link to Offprint, and the conversation is laid out as a readable dialogue, your messages and ChatGPT's replies with code blocks kept, inside your monthly printed magazine alongside the articles you save. Offprint prints the text of the conversation. The link needs to be one that opens without signing in, so a link from a personal account works and a workspace link doesn't.

Common questions

Does ChatGPT have a print button?

OpenAI's help pages on sharing and exporting conversations don't mention one. The reliable routes are your browser's print command, a share link, an export or a document, as described above.

How do I save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF?

Use option 1 or option 2, and in the print window choose Save as PDF (Firefox calls it Save to PDF) instead of a printer.

Will people see my name on a shared conversation?

OpenAI says shared links are anonymous by default, though some older sharing experiences may show the creator's name. Review the preview before you send a link to anyone.

Can I print a conversation from the ChatGPT app on my phone?

Create a share link from the app, open it in your phone's browser, and print from there. The steps for iPhone and Android are in How to print a webpage.
