How to save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF
ChatGPT has no Save as PDF button for chats. Here is what works: browser print to PDF, a shared link, or asking ChatGPT, plus fixes for long chats.
ChatGPT does not have a built-in "save this chat as a PDF" option for ordinary conversations (deep research reports are the exception, covered below). People have been asking OpenAI for one for a long time. Until it exists, there are three practical ways to get a PDF, and which one is best depends on how long the conversation is and what you need the PDF for.
| Method | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Browser print to PDF | Most chats, exact wording | Long tables and code may wrap or cut off |
| Shared link, then print | Sending and archiving | From a personal account it is a snapshot; later messages are not included |
| Ask ChatGPT to make a PDF file | A formatted summary or document | ChatGPT rewrites the content unless told otherwise |
The official data export in Settings is not a PDF route: it arrives as a ZIP of JSON data files. More on that at the end.
Method 1: Print the conversation to PDF from your browser
This keeps the exact text of the conversation and works on any plan.
Chrome on Windows, Mac or Linux
- Open the conversation in ChatGPT.
- Scroll from the top to the bottom once so the whole conversation has loaded.
- Press Ctrl+P (Windows and Linux) or Cmd+P (Mac).
- Set the destination to Save as PDF.
- Click Save and choose where to put the file.
Safari on Mac
- Open the conversation and scroll through it once.
- Choose File > Print.
- Click PDF at the bottom of the dialog and choose Save as PDF.
Chrome on Android
- Open the conversation in the Chrome app.
- Tap More, then Share, then Print.
- At the top, select Save as PDF and choose where to save it.
Tips for a cleaner result
- Check the preview page count. If a long chat previews far shorter than expected, part of it did not load. Scroll through the whole conversation again and retry.
- Wide tables and long code lines are the usual casualties: they can run off the right edge. Switching the layout to landscape in the print dialog can help.
- Print only what you need. Use the page range in the print dialog to skip the opening back-and-forth.
Method 2: Create a shared link, then print that
A shared link gives you a standalone page for the conversation that you can open in any browser and print with the steps above. It is also handy when you want both a PDF and a link you can send.
- In the conversation, click the share button at the top right (or share from the sidebar).
- Copy the link and open it in your browser.
- Print to PDF as in Method 1.
Two things to know:
- A personal-account link is a snapshot. It includes the conversation up to the moment you created or last updated it. If you keep chatting, select Share, then Update link to capture the new messages. A link made in a work or school workspace is different: it can include messages added after you shared it.
- You can share a single answer. Using the share option on one assistant response creates a link scoped to just that response, which is a neat way to get a PDF of one answer instead of the whole thread.
Links made from a personal account can be opened by anyone who has them. Links made in a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspace open only for eligible members of that workspace, so a shared link is not a way to get a work chat outside your organization.
Method 3: Ask ChatGPT to create the PDF
ChatGPT can often produce a downloadable file when you ask for one, and files you create in ChatGPT are saved to your Library so you can find them later. Whether it works in a given chat depends on your plan and the tools available, so treat this as worth a try rather than guaranteed. It is the route to take when you want a polished document rather than a transcript: a summary, a study guide, a plan with headings.
Ask plainly, for example: "Turn this conversation into a PDF. Include every question and answer word for word, with my messages labeled 'Me' and yours labeled 'ChatGPT'."
Be specific about "word for word" if you want a transcript. Otherwise ChatGPT will usually condense, reorder or tidy the content, which is great for a summary and wrong for a record. Read the result before you rely on it, and download the file right away: OpenAI notes that generated files can expire quickly.
Deep research reports have a real PDF button
If the conversation is a deep research report, you do not need any of the workarounds. Open the report, click the share icon and select Download as PDF. The PDF keeps the report's tables, images, linked citations and sources, and it works for past reports as well as new ones. Reports can also be downloaded as Markdown or Word.
Browser extensions
There are browser extensions that add an export button to ChatGPT and produce a PDF, Markdown or Word file. They can save time if you do this often. Before installing one, check what permissions it asks for: an extension that can read your ChatGPT pages can read your conversations. Prefer ones with a clear privacy policy and recent updates, and remember they are third-party tools that can break when ChatGPT changes its pages.
What about the official data export?
Settings > Data controls > Export data emails you a download link (OpenAI says exports can take up to 7 days, and the link expires 24 hours after you receive it). The ZIP contains a conversations.json file, or numbered JSON files for large histories, plus files from your chats and account metadata.
It is the right tool for backing up everything, but JSON is not a readable document and there is no PDF in the box. For a single conversation, Methods 1 to 3 are faster. Our guide to exporting ChatGPT conversations walks through the full export.
If you want it on paper, not just as a PDF
A lot of PDFs of ChatGPT chats exist only to be printed. If that is your goal, Offprint can skip the PDF step: text it a ChatGPT shared link and the conversation is typeset as a dialogue, your messages and ChatGPT's replies, and printed in your magazine alongside the articles you saved. It prints the text of the conversation (images from the chat are left out) and it needs a link anyone can open, so workspace links will not work.
