How to export a ChatGPT conversation (one chat or all of them)

There are two different jobs hiding behind "export a ChatGPT conversation," and ChatGPT handles them differently:

• One conversation, to keep, send to someone or print. ChatGPT has no "export this chat" button for ordinary conversations, but a shared link or a PDF from your browser does the job.
• Your whole history, as a backup. That is the official data export in Settings, which arrives as a ZIP file of data, not a readable document.

Export a single conversation

Option 1: Create a shared link

A shared link is the closest thing ChatGPT has to exporting one chat.

1. Open the conversation.
2. Click the share button at the top right of the chat, or share it from the sidebar.
3. Copy the link.

What you should know about shared links:

• On a personal account, it is a snapshot. The link includes the conversation up to the moment you created or last updated it. Messages you add later do not appear until you select Share, then Update link.
• On a work or school account, it is not. A link made in a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspace can include messages added after you shared it, so check the sharing notice before adding anything new to a shared work chat.
• You can share one answer instead. If you use the share option on a single assistant response, the link covers only that response.
• Who can open it depends on your account. A link made from a personal account can be viewed by anyone who has it. A link made in a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspace opens only for eligible members of that same workspace.
• Images and files vary by plan. On personal accounts, supported images and uploaded files can appear in the shared conversation. Workspaces have tighter rules.
• Deleting the link stops future access but does not delete your original conversation, and it does not remove a copy someone else already saved.

A shared link is good for sending a chat to someone, and it gives you a clean page you can print or save as a PDF from your browser.

Option 2: Save it as a PDF

Open the conversation (or its shared link) in your browser and print it to PDF:

• Chrome on a computer: press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Cmd+P (Mac) and choose Save as PDF as the destination.
• Safari on Mac: choose File > Print, then click PDF at the bottom of the dialog.
• Chrome on Android: tap More > Share > Print, then choose Save as PDF at the top.

Deep research reports

A deep research report is the one kind of ChatGPT output with a built-in export: open the report, click the share icon and select Download as PDF. Reports can also be downloaded as Markdown or Word.

Option 3: Copy the text

For a short exchange, selecting the text and pasting it into a document is still the fastest export there is. You lose ChatGPT's formatting in some apps, but you keep full control over what goes in.

Export your entire ChatGPT history

ChatGPT's official export gives you a copy of your chat history and other account data. Signed-in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro users can request it.

On the web

1. Sign in to ChatGPT and open your profile menu.
2. Select Settings, then Data controls.
3. Under Export data, select Export.
4. On the confirmation screen, select Confirm export.

On iPhone

1. Open the sidebar and tap your profile icon to open Settings.
2. Tap Data controls.
3. Under Export data, tap Export, then Confirm export.

What happens next

• ChatGPT sends you an email or SMS message when the export is ready. OpenAI says this can take up to 7 days.
• Open the message and select Download data export.
• The download link expires 24 hours after you receive it, so download it soon, while signed in to the same account that asked for it.

What is in the ZIP file

The ZIP contains your chat history and related account data: a conversations.json file (or several numbered conversation JSON files for large exports), files and other assets used in your conversations, and account and conversation metadata.

JSON is built for software, not for reading. It is the right format for a backup or for moving your history into another tool, but if you want a conversation you can read, print or hand to someone, use a shared link or a PDF instead.

Work and school accounts

Self-service export is not available in ChatGPT Business workspaces. If you use a Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspace, OpenAI's help center tells you to contact your workspace owner about data access. Edu workspaces have their own export instructions in OpenAI's help center.

Reading a conversation on paper

Some conversations are worth more than a scroll: a long research thread, a plan you want to mark up with a pen, an explanation you will come back to. If you would rather read those on paper without fiddling with print settings, Offprint can take a ChatGPT shared link sent by text and print the conversation, with your messages and ChatGPT's replies laid out as a dialogue, in your printed magazine. It reads the text of the conversation, so images in the chat are not included, and it can only read links that anyone can open, which rules out links from work and school workspaces.

Common problems

• "I never got the export email." Exports can take up to 7 days. Check spam, and check for an SMS if your account uses a phone number.
• "The download link doesn't work." It expires 24 hours after you receive it. Request a new export.
• "My shared link is missing my latest messages." Links from a personal account are snapshots. Open the conversation, select Share, then Update link to capture the new messages.
• "A coworker can't open my link." Links from a Business, Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspace only open for eligible members of that workspace.
